About the Blightwatch Service

A localised collaborative service between ADAS and its service providers.
Blightwatch.co.uk has been working together with ADAS to develop this management tool which is available to all users free of charge.

Traditionally the risk of potato blight infection has been based on the calculation of Smith Periods - a system that uses hourly temperature and relative humidity recordings. However, until now Smith Periods have been calculated for only a limited number of Met stations around the country.

Blightwatch builds on that tradition and still uses the familiar Smith Period criterion as the basis for the forecasting. It has significantly improved the local accuracy however by using many more met stations and by using sophisticated modelling and interpolation of Met Office weather records to calculate Smith Period values for individual postcode areas covering the whole of the UK.

It also records the minimum temperature recorded over the same period for these individual post code areas which will help in the interpretation of situations where the conditions are close to but not actually reaching the Smith period criteria.

While not being able to represent Smith Periods right down to individual field level, Blightwatch gives the highest possible accuracy at the local level using the official Met Office network.
